Boundaries · International Architectural Magazine

Boundaries is a quarterly international journal on contemporary architecture, with texts in English and Italian, that offers a critical view over the architectures that today deal, in many different ways, with the challenges of the contemporariness and of sustainability intended as a balance between cultural, environmental, economic and social matters.

Boundaries receives no public funding.

Una recensione di Francesca De Filippi su Il Giornale dell'Architettura
n. 104, aprile 2012

A new review on Archidose by John Hill about the third issue of Boundares: «Architectures of Peace / Architetture di pace».

«A few months ago I looked at the first two issues of Boundaries, a magazine out of Italy that develops a theme for each issue. "Contemporary Architecture in Africa" and "Architectures for Emergencies" are followed by "Architectures of Peace." It's clear where the focus of Boundaries lies: it's the humanitarian and under-served in the realm of architecture. Editor Luca Sampò is obviously not alone in this regard, as more organizations and firms dedicate themselves to architecture and design for the 99%, if you will. Regardless, in an issue like "Architecture of Peace" one can still find projects by Norman Foster, Daniel Libeskind, and Moshe Safdie, alongside lesser-known names like TYIN tegnestue Architects, Febrik, and Killian Doherty. In this regard it is the theme that prevails, not a particular type of architecture addressing such an idea as complex as peace».

Architectures of Peace

In this issue the focus is on the role of architecture in relation to peace, understanding the latter as a condition that is constantly negotiated, an ongoing process.

“Peace” is not compared to its opposite, nor is it referred to as the celebration of memories or events. It is not about considering philosophical or religious meaning, or authoritarianism and its modes of expression, nor to outline possibilities in the future. It is about favouring literature that allows the importance of the concreteness of work to emerge, of solidarity and tolerance, as well as of doubt and of prudence in judgement. Practices, those, that speak about dialogue, which grow out of “being together” and become, at the same time, the most effective expression of the art of being together; they take shape in the public space, and architecture has a lot to do with it.

«Peace is a bit like a city, it is built piece by piece», comments Renzo Piano in an exclusive conversation published in this issue.

ofARCH 120In edicola una recensione di Cristina Molteni su ofARCH, International Magazine of Architecture and Design, n. 120, gennaio 2012.
